Evidence and sources
Each number on the Hemoglobin page goes back to an experiment or a calculation. Each card shows the result, how it was measured, and where it was published.

Structures
- 2HHBDeoxy T state, full tetramerThe reference T state and the hero of the scene. The whole alpha2beta2 tetramer sits in the asymmetric unit, so no assembly step is needed. Entry 4HHB carries the same title, resolution, atom count and citation. X-ray diffraction, 1.74 Å.
- 2DN2Deoxy T state at 1.25 AHighest-resolution T state, and the full tetramer is in the asymmetric unit. Best choice when the engine needs one T model and one R model from the same study. X-ray diffraction, 1.25 Å.
- 2DN3Carbonmonoxy R state at 1.25 AThe R state partner for 2HHB and 2DN2. Load biological assembly 1, not the asymmetric unit, or only half the molecule appears. X-ray diffraction, 1.25 Å.
- 2DN1Oxy R state at 1.25 AThe R state with oxygen rather than carbon monoxide. Use it when the caption says oxygen. X-ray diffraction, 1.25 Å.
- 1HHOOxy R state, 1983 structureThe classic oxy structure that defined the R state. Its measured rotation against 2HHB is 13.0 degrees, slightly less than the 1.25 A entries. X-ray diffraction, 2.1 Å.
- 1GZXT state with oxygen at all four hemesSeparates the two halves of the mechanism. Ligand binding and the quaternary switch are different events, and this entry shows one without the other. X-ray diffraction, 2.1 Å.
- 1BBBA third quaternary structure, R2A liganded quaternary state that is neither classic T nor classic R, and a full tetramer in the asymmetric unit. RCSB records no DOI for its primary citation. X-ray diffraction, 1.7 Å.
- 1B86Tetramer with 2,3-BPG in the central cavityShows where 2,3-BPG binds, which is the physical basis for treating pH and BPG as changes in the allosteric constant L. X-ray diffraction, 2.5 Å.
- 4MQJFetal hemoglobin, HbFThe gamma-for-beta swap. RCSB lists the primary citation as unpublished, so no DOI is available. X-ray diffraction, 1.8 Å.
- 1FDHFetal deoxyhaemoglobin, 1977 structureThe deoxy fetal tetramer, for a T-state comparison with adult 2HHB. RCSB records no DOI for its primary citation. X-ray diffraction, 2.5 Å.
- 2HBSSickle hemoglobin, deoxyThe disease mutation. Two tetramers in one asymmetric unit also hint at the packing that leads to fibres. X-ray diffraction, 2.05 Å.
- 1HBBHb Rothschild, beta Trp37 to ArgA mutation placed exactly at the switch interface, which makes it the sharpest test of the allosteric contact. RCSB records no DOI for its primary citation. X-ray diffraction, 1.9 Å.
- 1A6MOxy myoglobin at 1.0 AThe evolutionary control. One globin with one heme and no cooperativity, at the highest resolution in this set. X-ray diffraction, 1 Å.
